This calculator estimates a healthy target weight for your height and sex using four classic clinical formulas: Devine, Robinson, Miller, and Hamwi. Use the spread they produce as a sensible weight range rather than treating any single number as a hard target.
How this is calculated
Each formula starts from a base weight at 5 feet and adds a per-inch increment for every inch of height above 60 inches, with the height entered in centimetres converted to inches first; results are returned in kilograms.
How to use
- Enter your sex and height in centimetres.
- Read the ideal weight from each of the four standard formulas.
- Use the range they form as a healthy target, not a single hard number.
Examples
- Male, 177.8 cm (70 in):
Devine 73 kg, Robinson 71 kg - Female, 165.1 cm (65 in):
Devine 57 kg, Miller 59.9 kg
FAQ
- Why are there four formulas?
- Devine, Robinson, Miller, and Hamwi were each developed at different times, mostly for medication dosing. They give slightly different numbers, so the spread is a more honest target than any single value.
- Which formula is best?
- There is no single best one. Devine is the most widely cited. Treat the four results as a healthy range and combine them with BMI and body-fat percentage for a fuller picture.
- Do these account for body frame or muscle?
- No. They depend only on height and sex, so a muscular or large-framed person may sit above the estimate while still being healthy. Use them as a guide.
