- 179 cm
- Likely range
- 170.5 to 187.5 cm
Predict a child's adult height from both parents' heights using the Tanner mid-parental method. Enter the father's and mother's heights and the child's sex to get a single estimate plus the range most children land within.
How this is calculated
It uses the mid-parental height formula: for a boy, add the parents' heights plus 13 cm and halve it; for a girl, subtract 13 cm before halving. The plus or minus 8.5 cm range reflects the usual spread around the prediction reported in growth references.
How to use
- Enter the father's height in centimetres.
- Enter the mother's height in centimetres.
- Choose the child's sex to see the predicted adult height and range.
Examples
- Father 180, mother 165, boy:
179 cm (170.5 to 187.5) - Father 178, mother 168, girl:
166.5 cm (158 to 175)
FAQ
- How accurate is a mid-parental prediction?
- It is a rough guide. Most children reach an adult height within about 8.5 cm either side of the estimate, but nutrition, health, and genetics beyond parental height all play a part.
- Why add or subtract 13 cm?
- The 13 cm (about 5 inches) adjustment reflects the average height difference between adult men and women, so the formula shifts the parental average toward the expected range for a boy or a girl.
- Does this work for a newborn?
- Yes. Because it uses the heights of the parents rather than the current size of the baby, you can use it at any age, including at birth.
