Estimate your body-fat percentage from a few tape measurements using the US Navy circumference method, plus the fitness category it lands in. A free, private way to track body composition without a scan or calipers.
How this is calculated
It applies the US Navy body-fat formula, which uses logarithms of height, neck, and waist for men (women also include hip circumference) to estimate the percentage, then maps it to a standard fitness category.
How to use
- Measure your neck, waist, and (for women) hips in centimetres.
- Enter those measurements along with your height and sex.
- Read your estimated body-fat percentage and category.
Examples
- Male, 180 cm, neck 40, waist 90:
18.37%, Average - Female, 165 cm, neck 33, waist 75, hip 100:
29.43%, Average
FAQ
- How does the US Navy method work?
- It estimates body fat from body circumferences using a formula based on height, neck, and waist (women also use hips). It is the same approach the US Navy uses for fitness screening.
- How accurate is it?
- The tape method is usually within about 3 to 4 percentage points of a DEXA scan for most people. It is a good free estimate, not a clinical measurement. Measure snugly and consistently for the best result.
- Where exactly do I measure?
- Neck just below the larynx, waist at the navel for men and at the narrowest point for women, and hips at the widest point. Keep the tape level and do not pull it tight.
