Estimate your body-fat percentage the way the US Army does, from a few tape measurements using the AR 600-9 circumference method. Men measure abdomen and neck, women add the hip, all in inches. It is a quick way to check where you stand against the tape test without a scale or scan.
How this is calculated
It applies the US Army AR 600-9 body-fat equations, which take base-10 logarithms of the circumference difference and height (abdomen minus neck for men, waist plus hip minus neck for women) to estimate the percentage, then maps it to a general fitness category.
How to use
- Measure your height, neck, and abdomen (women also measure waist and hips) in inches.
- Pick your sex and enter each measurement.
- Read your estimated body-fat percentage and category.
Examples
- Male, 70 in, neck 15, abdomen 34:
17.51%, Fitness - Female, 65 in, neck 13, waist 30, hip 39:
29.83%, Average
FAQ
- How does the Army tape test work?
- It estimates body fat from circumference measurements using the AR 600-9 formula. Men use abdomen and neck; women use waist, hip, and neck, together with height. It is the same method the Army uses to screen soldiers who exceed the weight-for-height table.
- How is this different from the Navy method?
- Both use tape measurements and logarithms, but the coefficients and measurement sites differ. The Army measures the abdomen at the navel for men, while the Navy measures the natural waist. Results between the two can differ by a few points.
- How accurate is it?
- The tape method is a screening estimate, usually within a few percentage points of a DEXA scan. Measure snugly and level, and take each measurement twice for consistency.
