How this is calculated
BMI is weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared, or 703 times pounds over inches squared in imperial units. The category labels follow the World Health Organization adult BMI ranges, which are not sex-specific.

FAQ
- Is BMI different for women and men?
- The BMI formula and the category cutoffs are the same for both. Women tend to carry more body fat than men at the same BMI, which is part of why BMI is a screening tool rather than a body-fat measurement.
- How is BMI calculated?
- In metric units BMI is weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. In imperial units it is 703 times weight in pounds divided by height in inches squared.
- Does BMI apply during pregnancy?
- BMI is not meant for pregnancy, since healthy weight gain changes the numbers. Talk to a clinician about appropriate weight ranges if you are pregnant.
