FAQ
- Is BMI different for men and women?
- The BMI formula and the category cutoffs are the same for both. Body composition differs on average between men and women, which is one reason BMI is a screening tool rather than a body-fat measurement.
- How is BMI calculated?
- In metric units BMI is weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. In imperial units it is 703 times weight in pounds divided by height in inches squared.
- Why might a fit, muscular man read as overweight?
- BMI does not separate muscle from fat, so a man with high muscle mass can land in the overweight range despite low body fat. Pair BMI with a body-fat or waist measurement for a fuller picture.
