How this is calculated
Decimal units step by 1000: 1 kB is 1000 bytes, 1 MB is a million bytes, 1 GB is a billion bytes. Binary units step by 1024: 1 KiB is 1024 bytes, 1 MiB is 1024 KiB, and so on. A bit is one eighth of a byte. Everything is converted to bytes and then to the target unit, so you can compare the decimal figure a drive is sold with against the binary figure software reports.

FAQ
- Why does a 1 TB hard drive show as about 931 GB on my computer?
- Drives are sold in decimal terabytes (1 TB = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes), but many operating systems report size in binary units and label them GB. In binary units that same drive is about 931 GiB, so the number looks smaller even though nothing is missing.
- What is the difference between MB and MiB?
- A megabyte (MB) is 1,000,000 bytes and a mebibyte (MiB) is 1,048,576 bytes. MiB is the binary unit, so it is about 4.9 percent larger than MB.
