Conversion
1 Bytes = 0.001 Kilobytes (kB)

Convert bytes to kilobytes for file sizes and payloads. This uses decimal kilobytes of 1000 bytes, and binary kibibytes are available when you need the values a file system reports.

How this is calculated

Decimal units use powers of 1000, so one kilobyte is 1000 bytes. Bytes are divided by 1000 to get kilobytes. The binary kibibyte (KiB) of 1024 bytes is offered separately.

How to use

  1. Enter the size in bytes.
  2. Keep bytes to kB, or press Swap for kB to bytes.
  3. Read the result in kilobytes.

Examples

  • One kilobyte: 1000 B = 1 kB
  • Small file: 2048 B = 2.048 kB
  • Kilobyte to bytes: 5 kB = 5000 B

FAQ

How many bytes are in a kilobyte?
A decimal kilobyte is 1000 bytes. A binary kibibyte is 1024 bytes.
Which one should I use?
Use the decimal kilobyte (1000 bytes) for storage and transfer figures. Use the kibibyte (1024 bytes) when matching what an operating system shows.
