Find the percentage increase between two numbers, such as a price change, a raise, or a jump in traffic. Enter the starting value and the new value and get the percent change and the plain difference. A negative result tells you the value dropped.

How this is calculated

Percentage increase is the change divided by the starting value, times 100: (new minus old) divided by old, times 100. This is the standard definition of percentage change measured against the original amount.

How to use

  1. Enter the starting value.
  2. Enter the new value.
  3. Read the percentage increase and the difference.

Examples

  • Price rise: 100 to 150 is a 50% increase
  • Drop: 80 to 60 is a 25% decrease

FAQ

How is percentage increase calculated?
Subtract the old value from the new value, divide by the old value, then multiply by 100. So going from 100 to 150 is 50 divided by 100, which is a 50 percent increase.
What if the value went down?
The result is negative, which is a percentage decrease. Going from 80 to 60 shows negative 25 percent.
Why can the starting value not be zero?
Percentage change is measured against the starting value, and dividing by zero has no meaning, so a nonzero starting value is required.
