Find the percentage change between a starting value and a new value, for prices, weights, scores, or any two numbers. A positive result is an increase and a negative result is a decrease. Enter the old and new figures to see both the raw difference and the percent.
How this is calculated
Percentage change is the difference between the new and old values divided by the size of the old value, times 100. The starting value cannot be zero, since dividing by zero leaves the percentage undefined. The percent keeps its sign, so a drop reads as a negative number.
How to use
- Enter the starting value.
- Enter the new value.
- Read the difference and the signed percentage change.
Examples
- Increase:
100 to 150 is a 50% increase - Decrease:
200 to 150 is a 25% decrease
FAQ
- How is percentage change calculated?
- Subtract the old value from the new value, divide by the size of the old value, then multiply by 100. From 80 to 60 that is -20 divided by 80, or -25 percent.
- Why does the starting value have to be nonzero?
- The formula divides by the starting value. A change from zero has no percentage, because any amount is an infinite increase over nothing.
