Add sales tax to a price or pull the tax back out of a total you already paid. Enter the amount and the rate, pick whether the amount is pre-tax or tax-inclusive, and the calculator returns the base price, the tax, and the total.
How this is calculated
In add mode, tax = price times rate, and total = price plus tax. In extract mode the amount is treated as tax-inclusive, so base = total divided by (1 + rate), and tax = total minus base. Rates are entered as a percent.
How to use
- Enter the amount.
- Enter the sales tax rate as a percent.
- Choose whether the amount is pre-tax (add) or tax-inclusive (back out the tax).
- Read the base price, tax, and total.
Examples
- $120 + 8.25% tax:
tax $9.90, total $129.90 - Back out 8.25% from $108.25:
base $100.00, tax $8.25
FAQ
- How do I back sales tax out of a total?
- Divide the tax-inclusive total by 1 plus the rate. At 8.25%, divide by 1.0825 to get the pre-tax price, then subtract it from the total for the tax.
- Does this include local and county tax?
- Only if you enter the combined rate. US sales tax is usually a state rate plus county and city rates, so add them together and enter the total rate.
- Is sales tax charged on the full price?
- In most states yes, though some exempt groceries, prescriptions, or clothing. This tool applies the rate you enter to the full amount.
