Building an invoice by hand is easy to get wrong once discounts and tax are involved. Enter each line item with its quantity and price, set a discount and tax rate, and this calculator returns the subtotal, the discount, the tax, and the amount due.
How this is calculated
The subtotal is the sum of quantity times unit price across all line items. The discount is a percentage of the subtotal. Tax is charged on the discounted amount (subtotal minus discount), which is the standard order used on most invoices. The grand total is the discounted subtotal plus tax.
How to use
- Add each line item with its quantity and unit price.
- Enter a discount percentage if one applies.
- Enter the sales tax rate to see the subtotal, discount, tax, and total due.
Examples
- 2 at $50, 1 at $100, 10% off, 8% tax:
Subtotal $200, discount $20, tax $14.40, total $194.40 - 5 items at $9.99, no tax or discount:
Total $49.95
FAQ
- Is tax applied before or after the discount?
- After. The discount is taken off the subtotal first, then tax is charged on the discounted amount. This is the standard approach on most invoices and receipts.
- Can I add several line items?
- Yes. Add a row for each product or service with its own quantity and price, and the calculator sums them into the subtotal.
- Does it handle different tax rates per item?
- No. It applies one tax rate to the whole invoice. For mixed rates, split the items into separate invoices or calculate each group on its own.
