Find the day-of-year number for any date, counting from January 1 as day 1. Useful for scheduling, spreadsheets, and systems that store dates as an ordinal day. It also shows how many days are left in the year and whether the year is a leap year.
How this is calculated
The tool counts the days from January 1 of the same year up to the chosen date and adds one, so January 1 is day 1 and December 31 is day 365, or 366 in a leap year. A year is a leap year when it is divisible by 4, except century years, which must be divisible by 400.
How to use
- Pick a date.
- Read its day-of-year number.
- Check the days remaining and whether it is a leap year.
Examples
- New Year:
2026-01-01 = day 1 - Leap year end:
2024-12-31 = day 366 - Start of March:
2026-03-01 = day 60
FAQ

- It is the position of a date within its year, from 1 on January 1 to 365 on December 31, or 366 in a leap year.
- How is a leap year decided?
- A year is a leap year if it divides evenly by 4, except for century years such as 1900, which must divide by 400. So 2024 is a leap year and 2026 is not.
