A 200 kg total means something very different for a 60 kg lifter than for a 120 kg lifter. The Wilks coefficient levels the field by scaling your total against a body-weight curve, so the Wilks score is the standard way meets rank lifters across weight classes.
How this is calculated
The Wilks coefficient is 500 divided by a fifth-order polynomial of body weight in kilograms, using the sex-specific constants published by Robert Wilks in 1994. Your Wilks score is that coefficient multiplied by your total lifted. Higher is better, and the curve is tuned so a world-class total scores near 500 regardless of weight class.

- How is Wilks different from DOTS?
- Both normalize strength across body weights, but DOTS uses a newer set of coefficients and no longer separates by sex in the same way. Many federations have moved to DOTS, while Wilks remains widely referenced.
