Work out your waist-to-hip ratio from two tape measurements and see the risk band it falls into. It is a quick check of where you carry fat, which research links to heart and metabolic risk more closely than weight alone.
How this is calculated
The ratio is your waist circumference divided by your hip circumference, taken in the same unit. Risk bands follow the World Health Organization cutoffs: for men, under 0.90 is low, 0.90 to 0.99 is moderate, and 1.0 and above is high; for women the thresholds are 0.80 and 0.85.
How to use
- Measure your waist at the narrowest point and your hips at the widest point, in the same unit.
- Enter both measurements and select your sex.
- Read your ratio and the risk band it falls into.
Examples
- Male, waist 80, hip 94:
0.85, Low risk - Male, waist 100, hip 95:
1.05, High risk
FAQ
- What is a healthy waist-to-hip ratio?
- The World Health Organization considers a ratio below 0.90 healthy for men and below 0.80 for women. Ratios at or above 0.90 for men and 0.85 for women are linked to a higher risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
- Where do I measure my waist and hips?
- Measure the waist at its narrowest point, usually just above the navel, and the hips at the widest part of the buttocks. Keep the tape level and snug without compressing the skin, and measure on bare skin or over thin clothing.
- Is waist-to-hip ratio better than BMI?
- They measure different things. BMI looks at weight for height, while waist-to-hip ratio looks at fat distribution. Carrying more fat around the middle raises health risk even at a normal BMI, so the two are useful together.
