Estimate for education only, not a medical diagnosis. Discuss your results with a clinician.
Convert an HbA1c percentage into an estimated average glucose, shown in both mg/dL and mmol/L. Enter your A1c and see the average blood sugar it corresponds to. This is an estimate for education, not a medical diagnosis.
How this is calculated
Uses the ADAG study regression adopted by the American Diabetes Association: estimated average glucose in mg/dL equals 28.7 times A1c minus 46.7. The mmol/L figure divides the mg/dL result by 18.0182, the standard glucose conversion factor.
How to use
- Enter your HbA1c as a percentage, for example 7.
- Read the estimated average glucose in mg/dL.
- Read the same value in mmol/L for units used outside the US.
Examples
- A1c 7%:
154 mg/dL (8.6 mmol/L) - A1c 6.5%:
140 mg/dL (7.8 mmol/L)
FAQ
- What is estimated average glucose?
- It is the average blood sugar your A1c corresponds to over the prior two to three months, expressed in the same units as a daily glucose meter reading.
- Is this a substitute for a lab test or medical advice?
- No. It uses a population regression, so your true average can differ. Use it for context and talk to a clinician about your results.
