This calculator shows the net profit or loss on a stock trade after buy and sell commissions, plus the percentage return on your cost. Enter the buy and sell prices, the number of shares, and any fees to see the full picture of a closed position. Use it to check a brokerage statement or to plan a target sell price.
How this is calculated
Total cost is the buy price times shares plus the buy commission. Proceeds are the sell price times shares minus the sell commission. Net profit is proceeds minus cost, and the return percentage is net profit divided by total cost.
How to use
- Enter the buy price and the number of shares.
- Enter the sell price and any buy and sell commissions.
- Read the total cost, proceeds, net profit, and percentage return.
Examples
- Buy 100 @ $50, sell @ $75, $5 each way:
net profit $2,490.00 (49.75%) - Buy 40 @ $120, sell @ $95:
net loss $1,000.00 (-20.83%)
FAQ
- Does this include commissions?
- Yes. The buy commission is added to your cost and the sell commission is subtracted from your proceeds, so the profit reflects what you actually keep.
- How is the percentage return calculated?
- Net profit divided by total cost, times 100. Total cost includes the buy commission, so the return is measured against everything you put in.
- Does it account for taxes or dividends?
- No. This shows the trade profit before capital gains tax and does not include any dividends received while you held the shares.
