Subtract a number of days from a date to find an earlier date and its weekday. Handy for working back from a deadline, a due date, or an event to know when to start. It steps back across months and years correctly.

How this is calculated

The start date is read as a calendar day, then the number of days is subtracted, rolling back across month and year boundaries. Leap years are handled, so a count that crosses February 29 lands on the correct earlier date.

How to use

  1. Enter the start date in YYYY-MM-DD format.
  2. Enter the number of days to subtract.
  3. Read the earlier date and its weekday.

Examples

  • Thirty days earlier: 2026-07-20 - 30 days = 2026-06-20
  • Across a month start: 2026-03-01 - 1 day = 2026-02-28
  • One week back: 2026-01-08 - 7 days = 2026-01-01

FAQ

What date was 30 days ago?
Enter today in the start box and 30 in the days box. The tool shows the date and weekday 30 days earlier.
Does it cross month and year boundaries?
Yes. Subtracting past the first of the month or the first of January rolls back to the correct earlier date.
