Work out how many hours you worked from a clock-in and clock-out time, minus an unpaid break. Enter the start and end times and any break in minutes to get net hours as a decimal and as hours and minutes. Overnight shifts that cross midnight are handled automatically.

How this is calculated

Each time is converted to minutes since midnight. When the end time is earlier than the start, the shift is treated as running past midnight and a full day of 1440 minutes is added to the span. The unpaid break is subtracted, and the net minutes are shown both as a decimal number of hours and as whole hours and minutes.

How to use

  1. Enter your start time in 24-hour format.
  2. Enter your end time and any unpaid break in minutes.
  3. Read the net hours as a decimal and as hours and minutes.

Examples

  • Day shift: 09:00 to 17:30 with a 30 min break is 8 hours
  • Overnight: 22:00 to 06:00 with a 45 min break is 7 h 15 m

FAQ

How are overnight shifts handled?
If the end time is earlier than the start time, the tool assumes the shift crossed midnight and adds 24 hours, so 22:00 to 06:00 counts as eight hours before the break.
Is the break paid or unpaid?
The break is treated as unpaid and subtracted from the total. Enter zero if your break is paid or you did not take one.
What is decimal hours used for?
Payroll often uses decimal hours, where 7 hours 15 minutes is 7.25. The tool shows both so you can use whichever your timesheet needs.
