Convert temperatures between Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin. Enter a temperature, pick the scale you have and the scale you want, and the result updates as you type. It covers everyday conversions like Celsius to Fahrenheit as well as Kelvin for science and engineering work.

How this is calculated

Temperature scales are related by both a ratio and an offset, so they cannot be converted with a single multiplier. Every input is first turned into Celsius, then into the target scale, using the standard relations F = C x 9/5 + 32 and K = C + 273.15. Kelvin values below zero are rejected because that is absolute zero, the coldest temperature that can exist.

How to use

  1. Type the temperature you want to convert.
  2. Choose the scale you are starting from.
  3. Choose the scale you want the answer in.
  4. Read the converted temperature, or press Swap units to reverse the direction.

Examples

  • Celsius to Fahrenheit: 100 C = 212 F
  • Fahrenheit to Celsius: 98.6 F = 37 C
  • Celsius to Kelvin: 0 C = 273.15 K

FAQ

What is the formula to convert Celsius to Fahrenheit?
Multiply the Celsius value by 9/5 and add 32. For example, 100 C times 9/5 is 180, plus 32 is 212 F, the boiling point of water.
Why can Kelvin not be negative?
Zero Kelvin is absolute zero, the point where molecular motion stops. Nothing can be colder, so a negative Kelvin reading is not physically possible and the tool flags it.
