How this is calculated
Fuel economy is inverse, so mpg equals a fixed constant divided by the L/100km value. The constant is 100 times the liters in a gallon divided by the kilometers in a mile: 235.214583 for the US gallon and 282.480936 for the imperial gallon.

- Why are US and imperial mpg different?
- The imperial gallon is larger than the US gallon, about 4.546 liters versus 3.785, so the same fuel use gives a higher number in imperial mpg.
- What is the conversion formula?
- Miles per gallon equals 235.214583 divided by the L/100km value for the US gallon, and 282.480936 divided by it for the imperial gallon.
- Is lower L/100km better?
- Yes. L/100km measures fuel used, so a smaller number means the car goes farther on the same fuel, which is the opposite of mpg where a bigger number is better.
