How this is calculated
Titles are trimmed at about 60 characters and descriptions at about 160, the common character approximations of the pixel-based limits Google uses. When text is too long the tool cuts back to the last full word and adds an ellipsis, and it reports the original character counts so you can tighten the copy.
How to use
- Enter your page title, meta description, and URL.
- Check the preview to see where each field would be cut off.
- Watch the character counts and trim anything past the limits.
Examples
- Too long:
a 66-character title is shown clipped to the last full word plus an ellipsis - Fits:
a short title and description are shown in full with no truncation
FAQ
- Why is the limit measured in characters?
- Google actually truncates by pixel width, but a character count is a close, practical approximation. Around 60 for titles and 160 for descriptions works well as a guide.
- Will search engines always show my exact text?
- Not always. Google may rewrite a title or pull a different description from the page depending on the query, so treat the preview as guidance.
- Does the meta description affect ranking?
- It is not a direct ranking factor, but a clear, relevant description can improve click-through, which matters for traffic.
