How this is calculated

Federal tax is computed by applying the 2024 progressive federal income tax brackets for your filing status to your taxable income; the marginal rate is the bracket containing your top dollar, and the effective rate is total federal tax divided by taxable income.

How to use

  1. Enter your taxable income (after deductions).
  2. Choose your filing status.
  3. Read your marginal bracket, federal tax, and effective rate.

Examples

  • Single, $65,400: marginal 22%, tax 9441, effective 14.44%
  • Married, $100,000: marginal 22%, effective rate below the bracket

FAQ

What is the difference between marginal and effective rate?
Your marginal rate is the rate on your last dollar of income, the bracket you "fall into". Your effective rate is total federal tax divided by taxable income, which is always lower because earlier dollars are taxed in lower brackets.
Which tax year and rules does this use?
It uses the 2024 US federal income tax brackets applied to taxable income (income after deductions). State and local taxes are not included.
Is this tax advice?
No. This is an estimate based on 2024 federal brackets for general guidance only and is not tax advice. Consult a qualified tax professional for your situation.
