This calculator projects the future value of a Roth IRA from a starting balance, an annual contribution, an expected return, and a time horizon. Use it to see how tax-free contributions compound over the years to retirement and how much of the final balance is growth rather than money you put in. It returns the future value, total contributed, and total growth.

How this is calculated

It spreads the annual contribution evenly across the year and applies the future value formula, starting balance times (1+i)^n plus the monthly amount times ((1+i)^n minus 1) divided by i, where i is the monthly rate (annual divided by 12 divided by 100) and n is the number of months.

How to use

  1. Enter your current Roth IRA balance.
  2. Enter your annual contribution, expected annual return, and number of years.
  3. Read the projected future value, total contributed, and tax-free growth.

Examples

  • $10k + $7k/yr at 7% / 30 yr: future value $792,814.72
  • Growth share: $220,000 contributed → $572,814.72 growth

FAQ

How does a Roth IRA grow tax-free?
You contribute after-tax dollars, and qualified withdrawals in retirement, including all investment growth, are completely tax-free. This calculator shows how those contributions compound over time.
Is there a limit to how much I can contribute?
Yes. The IRS sets an annual contribution limit (with a higher catch-up amount for those 50 and older) and phases out eligibility at higher incomes. Check the current IRS limits before contributing.
What return rate should I use?
It depends on your investments. A diversified stock portfolio has historically averaged around 7% real return, but past performance does not guarantee future results, use a rate you are comfortable projecting.
