See what a lump sum plus regular monthly deposits will grow to at a set interest rate. Enter a starting amount, a monthly contribution, an annual rate, and a number of years. The tool separates how much you put in from how much the interest added.

How this is calculated

Growth uses the standard future value formula with monthly compounding: the starting amount grows by (1 plus the monthly rate) raised to the number of months, and each monthly deposit is grown by the ordinary annuity factor. Interest is the future value minus everything contributed.

How to use

  1. Enter your starting amount.
  2. Enter a monthly contribution, or leave it at zero for a lump sum only.
  3. Enter the annual interest rate and the number of years.
  4. Read the future value, total contributions, and interest earned.

Examples

  • $10,000 at 6% for 10 years: Future value $18,193.97
  • $200/month at 7% for 20 years: Future value $104,185.33

FAQ

Does this assume monthly or annual compounding?
Monthly. The rate is divided by 12 and applied each month, and monthly contributions are added at the end of each month.
What is total contributions?
It is the starting amount plus every monthly deposit you make over the period, before any interest. The rest of the balance is interest.
