Work out the dividend yield of a stock from its annual dividend per share and current price, then see the income a holding would produce. Enter the dividend, the share price, and how many shares you hold to compare income stocks on a like-for-like basis.

How this is calculated

Dividend yield is the annual dividend per share divided by the share price, expressed as a percentage. This is the standard yield formula used to compare income stocks. Cost is the share price times the number of shares, and annual income is the dividend per share times the number of shares.

How to use

  1. Enter the annual dividend per share.
  2. Enter the current share price.
  3. Add how many shares you hold to see cost and yearly income.

Examples

  • Yield: a $2.50 dividend on a $50 share is a 5% yield
  • Income: 100 shares at that dividend pay $250 a year

FAQ

Is yield based on the price I paid or the current price?
The standard yield uses the current price. If you enter the price you paid, you get your yield on cost instead, which reflects your own position.
Does a higher yield always mean a better stock?
No. A very high yield can signal a falling share price or a dividend at risk of being cut. Yield is one input, not the whole picture.
Is the dividend before or after tax?
This uses the stated dividend before tax. Taxes on dividends vary by country and account type and would reduce the income you keep.
