Find the compound annual growth rate of an investment from its starting value, ending value, and the number of years held. CAGR smooths an uneven return into one steady yearly rate, which makes it easy to compare investments held for different lengths of time.
How this is calculated
CAGR = (ending value / beginning value)^(1 / years) - 1, expressed as a percent. The tool also shows total growth, which is simply (ending / beginning) - 1 over the whole period without annualizing.
How to use
- Enter the beginning value of the investment.
- Enter the ending value.
- Enter the number of years held.
- Read the compound annual growth rate and total growth.
Examples
- $10,000 to $19,000 over 5 years:
CAGR 13.70% - $5,000 to $2,500 over 2 years:
CAGR -29.29%
FAQ
- What is the difference between CAGR and total return?
- Total return is the full percentage change over the whole period. CAGR converts that into the steady yearly rate that would produce the same result, so you can compare holdings of different lengths.
- Can CAGR be negative?
- Yes. If the ending value is below the beginning value, the rate is negative, showing an average yearly loss.
- Does CAGR account for deposits or withdrawals?
- No. CAGR only uses the start and end values. If you added or withdrew money along the way, use an internal-rate-of-return calculation instead.
